This is an original concept piece done by Tom Shannon, who was the assistant head of layout. Tom is also known for layout work in other big Disney greats such as 'Aladdin', 'Beauty and the Beast,' and 'The Lion King.' He has been in the industry since the 80's and provided the background designs to iconic television series such as 'He Man and the Masters of the Universe,' as well as being a layout supervisor for 'She-Ra Princess of Power,' and the animated 'Ghostbusters' TV show.
This is listed as something for Sequence 1 — it specifically is for the original Viking prologue and is the head mast of Sigurd's longboat.
I've seen a fair few places label this as watercolour, however I can confirm that the pieces of Tom's artwork I own both are actually done in marker, with accenting and detailing in places with pencil on some.
This was acquired from an estate sale of Tom Shannon's items.
